The Mitsubishi F-2 is a Japanese multirole fighter based on the Lockheed Martin F-16. Compared to the F-16, the F-2 has a 25% larger wing, increased composite materials, a longer and wider nose, a larger tail plane, a larger intake, and a 3-piece canopy.

OK, I just learned about this F-16 Variant last month. I figured it was the same thing as the F-16, but with a different engine, electronics, market, etc..
You know, like a Geo Prism.
I learned today that it's a little more complicated for that.
Neat

Lockheed Martin F-16? General Dynamics maybe.

When the concept was first formed, it was still General Dynamics, but by the time production started on the F-2 the General Dynamics military aircraft division had been purchased by Lockheed.

So, is this "based on" the F-16 in the same way that the Super Hornet is "based on" the Hornet? They bear a significant outward similarity, but they are actually completely different aircraft. I knew about the F-2 but I didn't realize it was so much larger. Never really paid attention. It looks like the canopy came from the beloved F-15C.

Pretty much. It doesn't look much bigger to the naked eye. I knew that canopy looked familiar, but I couldn't place it.
